Time Warp Mode engaged! Sunday, September 14, 2014. This weekend was the annual Small Press Expo in Rockville, MD. At the conclusion of the con we're finally slowing down after a busy summer. SPX is North America's premiere independent cartooning and comic arts festival. It is one of the few events of its kind and very big for the indie and 'zine community. Among the guests this year were Lynda Barry, Bob Mankoff, Raina Telgemeier and the legendary Jules Feiffer.
SPX is also unique as it is run entirely by volunteers. And they have been extremely effective at raising the profile of the con and its organization. SPX is a non-profit organization that was established in 1994 with the primary mission of promoting artists and publishers who produce independent comics. SPX supports the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, The Graphic Novel Gift Program and is a sponsor of The Library of Congress National Book Festival.
There remains a purity to SPX in these days when for profit multi-media fan conventions are on the rise. If you're a fan of the sequential storytelling artform and you've never attended this con you owe it to yourself to check it out. You can learn more about SPX via their website at:
